7.30pm. Doors open. 8pm show.
It’s Friday night and upstairs at the Bard Apothecary the bar is absolutely pumping. But the real magic is happening downstairs, where a small, intimate audience is waiting for the Lady in Green to come and entertain us.
But she doesn’t just entertain us. Together with her two very talented musicians, Sophie takes us on a story. A journey. Part storytelling, part poetry, part singing and part “here, let me just share a little piece of my soul with you.”
And I’m here for it.
The songs are woven with little stories from all over — some funny, some raw, some unexpected — and while I’ve always known Sophie as an incredible actor and creative, I had never actually heard her sing.
Well. HELLO. What a voice!
The music moves effortlessly through the sounds and textures of show tunes, jazz, folk, rock and beautiful balladry. There are little echoes of so many different musical worlds woven throughout, yet somehow none of it feels like imitation. It’s completely original, with every song having its own character, rhythm and story.
And Sophie? She can SING. My personal favourites were the Willow Tree song, Swagger, and the encore — which I somehow found myself singing along to despite having NEVER heard it before. 😂 That’s when you know you’ve got a catchy one!
There is something wonderfully raw and magical about this sharing. It feels intimate without being overly precious, theatrical without losing its honesty, and funny without ever shying away from the more vulnerable moments.
It’s the kind of night where you go downstairs expecting to be entertained and come back upstairs feeling like you’ve been let into someone’s world for a little while.
So, bravo Lady in Green. A gorgeous night of music, storytelling, poetry, soul — and one hell of a voice.
Go see her. Seriously.
